The 2013 McLaren MP4-12C is the first production vehicle since 1998 when the legendary F1 set the record for the world’s fastest production car. The car was entirely designed and built by McLaren. The advanced vehicle is designed to compete with the Lamborghini Gallardo and the Ferrari’s 458. From the latest model year, the automaker updated the MP4-12C with a number of tweaks and has pledged to install the updates on every model already sold for free. The 12 in the name is a reference to its internal rating system, and the C comes from the carbon fiber construction. Let’s see why the MP4-12C sits among the world best cars.
The 2013 McLaren MP4-12C has not changed much, weighting 88 pounds more than the coupe. The 3250 pounds car is powered by a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-8 with the same uprated 618 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. The rear glass window incorporated into the deck allows us to see the eight-cylinder beast. In order to manage the increase in power, the engine has been paired with a seven-speed seamless Shift dual-clutch gearbox. As with the coupe, there is no available manual transmission. The car goes from 0 to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds and tops out at 207 mph.
Because the coupe that debuted years ago was designed as an open-topped car, the 165-pound carbon-fiber passenger cell did not require much reinforcement. The 2013 McLaren MP4-12C features a carbon fiber composite chassis with a new steel structure embedded in each buttress. The flying buttresses remind of Formula 1 race cars. The floor structure weighs just 176 pounds and is crafted as a single unit part of the chassis. The lightweight body panels are made of aluminum and SMC plastic. The retractable fiberglass hardtop can be operated at low speeds below 19 mph and folded in less than 17 seconds.
The suspension is also made out of lightweight forged aluminum and the conventional anti-roll bars are now a hydraulic system that provides excellent cornering performance. The McLaren’s ProActive Chassis Control is electronically controlled. At low speeds, an optional suspension lift mode raised both the front and rear of the car to make the ride smoother. It provides 1.0 inch of lift at the rear and 1.6 inches at the front. Moreover, the world best car has a new system that allows the driver to adjust how much engine noise can be heard from the cabin.
McLaren Automotive developed an exclusive interior trim for the MP4-12C featuring high-quality leather. Optional semi-aniline leather can be applied on all interior surfaces, including the center console, dash, seats and doors. It also includes flat piping along the edge of the door and around the sear with a Carbon Black finish, although buyers can request Harissa Red, McLaren Orange and Stone Grey.
